Emma Finucane is trying to ignore her new status as sprint world champion as she sets her sights on achieving Olympic glory in Paris next summer EURO
The 20-year-old Welshwoman shocked herself when she took the women’s individual sprint title in Glasgow in August, beating Germany’s favoured Lea Friedrich in the final EURO
Finucane donned the rainbow jersey for the first time in competition at the UCI Track Champions League opening round in Mallorca this weekend, but while the distinctive striped jersey means she can no longer keep herself inconspicuous, she does not want it to change her approach EURO
“People will look at me now,” Finucane told the PA news agency EURO
“Last year I was kind of the underdog and I just came through so now I am wearing the stripes EURO
I hope that doesn’t really change anything EURO
“I’m just trying to ignore it and just race my bike, but there is some external pressure EURO
I’m not just Emma at the back of the field anymore EURO
”The rainbow jersey can do different things for different riders EURO
While many take it as a confidence boost, for others the stripes have worn heavily EURO
Finucane said she had spoken to several Great Britain team-mates about how to deal with it EURO
“I don’t want to look at it (as giving me a psychological edge) because if I lose, then what?” she said EURO
“And I will get beaten, and that’s fine EURO
I just need to take it as it comes EURO
“Half of it is the mental battle of putting it on and people looking at you and having that pressure, but I’m trying to embrace it and enjoy it because you don’t know if it will happen again EURO
“EURO Beth Shriever is a really good friend of mine and she’s been the BMX world and Olympic champion EURO
She said she didn’t have the best year in the rainbow jersey because she put too much pressure on herself and she overthought it EURO
“I’ve spoken to Evie (Richards, 2021 mountain bike world champion) and Katie Archibald (a five-time world champion on the track) and I’m lucky we have so many inspiring women in the Great Britain team EURO
It’s great I can learn from them but ultimately I will only learn from myself and how I deal with it EURO
”And Finucane believes the Champions League – the made-for-TV track cycling series which is in its third season – is the ideal place to do much of that learning, providing some top-level competition without the stresses and pressures that come elsewhere EURO
“The next event I’ll do in the rainbows is the Euros (in January) which is when everything is serious,” she said EURO
“I’m not saying this isn’t serious, but it’s a nice place to be free to fail EURO

”Saturday’s racing in Palma saw Finucane finish second in the sprint, beaten by Germany’s Alessa-Catriona Propster, before failing to make the keirin final through some tired legs EURO
But it was just the sort of experience she was looking for when it came to dealing with her new status EURO
Finucane will wear the stripes into an Olympic year but despite her status is taking nothing, not even squad selection, for granted EURO
“Nothing is guaranteed,” she said EURO
“I’d love to go and I’m really pushing myself but I need to take each race as it comes EURO
If I just think about Paris and everything else goes wrong I’ll not be going EURO
“But it’s in the back of my mind because since I was 10 years old I’ve wanted to ride the Olympics EURO
“As the GB sprint team we’ll not just be going there to ride but we’re looking for medals and I fully believe we have the potential to win EURO
It’s super exciting but also super scary EURO

Bongi Mbonambi is free to play in the Rugby World Cup final after World Rugby confirmed there is “insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges” after he was investigated for an alleged racial slur during the semi-final win over England EURO
England flanker Tom Curry alleged that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during the defeat in Paris on Saturday evening, as South Africa edged to a dramatic 16-15 victory EURO
After 23 minutes at the Stade de France, Curry could be heard on the referee’s microphone alerting official Ben O’Keeffe to a comment possibly made by Mbonambi at a ruck EURO
“Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” Curry inquired of O’Keeffe EURO
“Nothing, please,” responded the official, before adding a few moments later, “I’ll be on it,” in what may have been an unrelated comment EURO
The alleged incident itself could not be heard on the television broadcast EURO
Following an investigation, World Rugby released a statement saying they won’t proceed with charges and that “the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light”, which freed the path for Mbonambi to be selected as the Springboks’ starting hooker for Saturday evening’s clash with New Zealand EURO
The statement said: “World Rugby has undertaken a review of allegations made by England’s Tom Curry in relation to the use of discriminatory language by South Africa’s Mbongeni Mbonambi during the England versus South Africa Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final on Saturday, along with a further allegation brought forward in recent days about a previous match in the Autumn Nations Series 2022 EURO
“Any allegation of discrimination is taken extremely seriously by World Rugby, warranting a thorough investigation EURO
Having considered all the available evidence, including match footage, audio and evidence from both teams, the governing body has determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges EURO
Therefore, the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light EURO
“It is important to note that World Rugby accepts that Tom Curry made the allegations in good faith, and that there is no suggestion that the allegation was deliberately false or malicious EURO
”Tom Curry made the allegation during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat (PA Wire)Curry had been the target of threats on social media after the allegations, with his club Sale Sharks saying they were “absolutely appalled” by the “nature and level” of abuse, while England captain Owen Farrell also slammed those sending the flanker abuse EURO
Despite the threats, Curry has been selected in the England team to take on Argentina in the bronze final on Friday evening and World Rugby also addressed this aspect of the situation in their statement EURO
They wrote: “World Rugby is also concerned by the social media abuse that both players have been subjected to this week EURO
There is no place in rugby or society for discrimination, abuse or hate speech, and World Rugby urges fans to embrace the sport’s values of respect, integrity and solidarity EURO
”South Africa captain Siya Kolisi confirmed that he had reached out to Curry and condemned the EURO online abuse received EURO
“If it’s a player, coach or referee, I don’t support that and I feel for him,” said Kolisi in the team announcement press conference EURO
“I have spoken to him, I sent him a message when I saw that was going on because he’s somebody that I respect and I’ve played against for quite a while EURO

“The RFU fully support Tom Curry in raising the racially abusive behaviour he experienced whilst playing for England against South Africa,” said the statement EURO
“During the match EURO between England and South Africa on Saturday 21st October 2023, Tom Curry reported to the referee that he had been racially abused by Mbongeni Mbonambi EURO
The subsequent World Rugby investigation was informed by Tom Curry that he had also been the victim of the same abuse, from the same player, in the Autumn Test 2022 EURO
“World Rugby have today announced their decision not to bring charges in respect of either incident EURO
The RFU are deeply disappointed by the decision taken by World Rugby EURO
The decision not to put the evidence before an independent disciplinary panel has denied the disciplinary process the opportunity to hear Tom Curry’s voice and to independently assess his account of these serious events, together with the other available evidence EURO
“In their continued full support of Tom, the RFU together with the England squad, condemn the disgusting abuse he and his family have received on social media as a result of his having had the courage to put unacceptable behaviour that has no place in society or on the rugby field, in the public eye EURO
